Scott Carpenter Died at the Age of 88


Scott Carpenter, one of the original members of the Mercury 7 - NASA's first group of astronauts - has died aged 88, his family has announced.

In 1962 Carpenter became the second American to orbit the earth, piloting the Aurora 7 spacecraft through three revolutions of the earth.

The rumour was heightened with the heavy presence of armed mobile policemen in Gwalameji, Yelwa and other areas of the state capital.

11-yr-old girl was Raped by Butcher

An Upper Area Court in Mararaba, NasarawaState, yesterday, sentenced a 27-year-old butcher, Mu’azu Lawali, to four years imprisonment for raping a minor.
The presiding officer, Mr. Vincent Gwehemba, did not give the convict an option of fine.
The convict, who lives in Angwan Ganda Masaka, was arraigned for having unlawful carnal knowledge of an 11-year-old girl.

Lew: Debt limit brinkmanship very dangerous

US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has warned that pushing talks over the debt ceiling to the last minute could be "very dangerous".
He said that the US government could suddenly run out of money some time after 17 October, which would have "serious" repercussions.
He also warned that the Treasury's payment systems were not designed to work without funds for payment.
According to Mr Lew that would make it difficult to prioritise payments.The current debt limit of $16.699 trillion was reached in May.

ASUU Strike: Electricity workers threaten power sector shutdown

ENUGU — THE National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, yesterday, gave the Federal Government seven days to resolve the strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, or face a total shut down of electricity facilities in the country.
The union said that it could no longer sit back and watch those in positions of authority destroy the future of young Nigerians who have remained at home for weeks on account of the Federal Government’s refusal to meet the legitimate demands by ASUU.

The World Bank’s new Africa’s Pulse, a twice-yearly analysis of the issues shaping Africa’s economic prospects has suggested that most of the world’s poor people by 2030 will live in Africa.
World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim, had last April called for a commitment by the international community to end extreme poverty by 2030 and to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people living in developing countries.

Libyan PM Ali Zeidan freed from captivity



Libyan PM Ali Zeidan has called for "calm and "wisdom" after being freed from the custody of militiamen.
He was abducted from a Tripoli hotel and held for several hours by armed men whose identity has yet to be confirmed.
In a televised cabinet meeting, the PM thanked those who freed him, suggesting there had been a security operation.
The motive of the abduction is unclear but some militias had been angered by a US commando raid to capture senior al-Qaeda suspect Anas al-Liby.
Many militia groups saw the raid in Tripoli on Saturday as a breach of Libyan sovereignty and there is growing pressure on the government to explain if it was involved.
One group, the Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (LROR), said it had captured Mr Zeidan, claiming it was acting on orders from the prosecutor general. But the justice ministry denied this.
The LROR said its actions had not been related to Mr Liby's detention.
The official Lana news agency also named another formal rebel group, the Brigade for the Fight against Crime, as being involved.

Syria 'cooperative' on chemical weapons, OPCW chief says


The Syrian government is working constructively with the international team charged with overseeing the destruction of the nation's chemical weapons, the chief of the world's chemical weapons watchdog said Wednesday.
Inspectors visited a first site earlier this week, where they saw some chemical weapons equipment destroyed, and are expected to visit more than 20 others over the coming days, said Ahmet Uzumcu, director-general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
"The cooperation has been quite constructive, and I will say that the Syrian authorities have been cooperative," Uzumcu told reporters at The Hague on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Xinjiang government, Luo Fuyong, said that local police had gathered around 900 pieces of evidence of online rumor spreading and arrested at least 256 people.
Of those, he said 139 had spread rumors about jihad, or Muslim holy war, mainly through posting videos that showed violent terrorist attacks or taught viewers how to create bombs and explosive devices.
"Jihad and terrorists are the enemy of all human races," Luo said.

Three Nigerians accused of kidnapping



Three Nigerians accused of kidnapping a child were lynched to death on Tuesday by an angry mob of young rioters in Bissau, according to a hospital source.
The trio was killed after the disappearance of a young boy on Tuesday morning in the capital of Guinea-Bissau.

(CNN) -- Ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy is slated to stand trial starting on November 4 on charges of committing and inciting violence, state media said Wednesday.
Facing trial alongside him are 14 other members of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, state news agency MENA said.

Officials of Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit have confiscated dozens of rams on display for sale in a prohibited area of the state.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum, (Upstream) Senator Emmanuel Paulker, who confirmed the abrupt postponement of the public hearing in Abuja, said it was “due to circumstances beyond our control.”
Paulker said there was no cause for alarm as everything would be done to ensure passage of the bill, assuring that “at the end of the day, national interest will prevail and the PIB will see the light of the day in the life of this National Assembly.”

Four days after a tragic crash involving an Associated Airline plane killed 14 people in Lagos, Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, on Monday described accidents as God’s will that are  inevitable.
She said notwithstanding this reality, the Federal Government would continue to ensure there were no accidents.
Oduah made the submission while fielding questions from State House correspondents on investigations into the Thursday  Lagos crash, the safety of the nation’s airspace and the suspension of Dana Air’s operations, among other issues.

I saw policemen kill my dad – Six-year-old girl


A six-year-old girl, Mariam Adeniji, is currently in shock after witnessing the killing of her father, Rafiu Adeniji, who was allegedly shot dead by policemen on Sunday.
The little girl, who spoke to PUNCH Metro while trying to fight back tears, said her father was killed after challenging policemen over an accident along the Mangoro end of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
She said, “My daddy was driving home when someone hit his car. He went to see the policemen; they just brought out their guns and shot him. They then ran away.”

He said, “Adeniji, Mariam and I, were all in his Honda car; Adeniji was driving. We were headed towards Agege when we saw a white police patrol vehicle with the inscription, OPS Attack, chasing a commercial bus. So, Rafiu swerved to the side and allowed the vehicle to pass.
“We continued on our journey but after a while, we found ourselves behind the same bus. Suddenly, the driver of the bus applied his brake.”

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — U.S. interrogators headed to an American warship in the Mediterranean to question a suspected Libyan al-Qaida operative linked to the bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa, as new details emerged Monday about plots planned by a Kenyan militant who escaped a U.S. raid in Somalia.
The two operations, thousands of miles apart in Africa and approved by President Barack Obama, signaled an American readiness to go after militants in nations where authorities are unable to do so, even years later.
The suspect captured in Tripoli is under U.S. federal indictment but was being held in military custody aboard the USS San Antonio in international waters — detained under the laws of war as an enemy combatant.

A Japanese town that achieved a bloody fame for its annual dolphin slaughter has announced plans to open a marine park where visitors can swim with the mammals – as well as eat their meat – while the hunt continues in a nearby bay.
Taiji town official Masaki Wada announced the ambitious plans which could see a 28 hectare area netted off at the entrance to Moriura Bay, on Monday
“We already use dolphins and small whales as a source of tourism in the cove where dolphin-hunting takes place,” he told AFP, as reported by The Japan Times.

“In the summer, swimmers can enjoy watching the mammals that are released from a partitioned-off space.

The annual slaughter of dolphins was highlighted by 2009’s eco-documentary The Cove, which chronicled efforts to end the senseless slaughter of 23,000 dolphins annually in the coastal village.

The EU's executive will today push for extra resources to launch patrols to cope with the flood of refugees knocking at Europe's doors.
The EU's Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said as she went into talks with the 28-nation bloc's home affairs ministers that she would propose "a big Frontex operation right across the Mediterranean from Cyprus to Spain for a big save and rescue operation."
Frontex is the agency set up by the European Union in 2004 to police the bloc's borders against illegal migration.

Members of Baptist Churches in Iwo, embarked on demonstration, on Monday morning, shutting down Baptist High School, Adeke, denouncing the new education system, just as  they vowed to resist it with all available measures.
Nigerian Tribune investigation indicated that the protest was allegedly sparked  off by the merger of some pupils from Muslim schools to Baptist High School, Adeke, in Iwo, a development which heightened tension in the ancient town.

Mr Sarkozy has been left off a list of those to appear for trial over the "Bettencourt affair", Le Monde reports.
